Toyota Gazoo Racing Indonesia tests the new generation gravel tyre on the GR Yaris Rally2 ahead of its introduction into the Indonesian Rally Championship.
The latest test session organised in Indonesia by Vittorio Caneva Rally School together with Toyota Gazoo Racing Indonesia marked an important technical milestone for rallying in South East Asia. For the first time ever on Indonesian soil, the new Pirelli Scorpion AT gravel tyres were mounted and tested on the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, bringing the latest evolution of Pirelli’s gravel tyre technology into one of the fastest growing rally environments in the region.
The new Scorpion AT replaces the long standing K tyre family that has been a benchmark in international gravel rallying for years. Developed specifically for modern Rally2 and four wheel drive rally cars, the AT represents a major step forward in consistency, durability and performance on rough gravel surfaces.
Technical Evolution from the K Generation
During the Indonesian test programme, Vittorio Caneva Rally School engineers and instructors worked closely with Toyota Gazoo Racing Indonesia to evaluate the tyre behaviour across different road conditions, from loose and sandy sections to compact and rocky surfaces. The demanding terrain provided the perfect environment to analyse the new tyre construction and compound philosophy under real rally conditions.
According to Pirelli’s technical data, the new Scorpion AT features an asymmetric, non directional tread pattern designed to improve traction efficiency and stability while reducing irregular wear. Compared to the previous K specification, the new tyre delivers lower wear rate, improved wear consistency and increased mileage over long stages.
Another major technical evolution is the unified tyre structure. Pirelli has eliminated the need for reinforced versions, simplifying tyre management while maintaining strength and resistance against impacts and rough surfaces. The tread and profile alignment has also been redefined to optimise contact patch stability during braking and lateral load transitions.
Compounds Developed for Every Gravel Condition
The Scorpion AT range is divided into three compounds adapted to different working temperatures and surface characteristics:
• AT8 Soft compound for soft and sandy terrain with a working range between 20° and 60°C
• AT6 Medium compound developed for packed gravel conditions with operating temperatures from 50° to 100°C
• AT4 Hard compound designed for hard and rocky stages with optimal temperatures between 90° and 130°C
For Indonesian conditions, where stages often combine humid surfaces, abrasive gravel and high ambient temperatures, the tyre’s ability to maintain performance consistency over long distances becomes a decisive factor. The improved mileage and more controlled degradation allow drivers to push with greater confidence throughout the stage while maintaining predictable handling balance.
A New Step for Indonesian Rallying
The test also highlighted the growing technical level of Indonesian rallying. With the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 operating under FIA Rally2 regulations, the combination of advanced chassis performance and the latest gravel tyre generation opens a new phase for the national championship.
Following the successful test programme conducted with Vittorio Caneva Rally School, the new Pirelli Scorpion AT tyres will now be introduced into the Indonesian National Rally Championship, becoming the new reference tyre for gravel competition in the country.
