A Career forged in speed
Vittorio Caneva was born in Asiago, Italy, on March 12, 1957. His passion for rallying ignited in 1972, and by 1976, he was already competing in his first rallies, driving a Fiat 127 Gr. 2. His early career quickly gathered momentum, and in 1977, Caneva participated in the Triveneto Rally Championship, finishing 2nd in his class. This year also saw him securing several victories while driving a VW Golf GTI and an Opel Kadett GTE in various national rallies.
In 1979, Vittorio Caneva took part in the A112 Trophy, where he achieved impressive results, finishing 7th overall and 3rd in the under-23 category. His success continued into the following year, where he competed with a factory-backed car from Jolly Club in the A112 Trophy, securing two significant victories at the Costa Smeralda and San Marino rallies. He also earned three second places, one third, and one fourth place, ultimately finishing 2nd overall in the championship standings. Despite these accomplishments, Caneva was unable to secure an official seat for the 1981 season, forcing him to step back from competition.
In 1982, a breakthrough came when Citroën Italia signed Caneva to drive a Visa Group B in the Italian Rally Championship. Throughout the season, he achieved notable results, including 8th at San Marino, 10th overall and 1st in Group B at the San Remo Rally, and 11th overall at the 4 Regioni Rally. These performances, despite driving a relatively uncompetitive car, helped to establish the Caneva-Citroën partnership at a European level.
The collaboration with Citroën Italia continued in 1983 with the Visa Group B, where Caneva secured memorable results such as 4th overall at the Piancavallo Rally, 5th overall in Aosta, 8th at the Colline di Romagna Rally, and 11th at San Remo. In 1984, he focused on developing the Visa 4-wheel drive for Citroën Italia, achieving a 3rd place overall at the Gran Sasso Rally. However, the challenges of the year’s long rallies, coupled with mechanical issues, often forced him to retire, although his speed remained evident, as shown by his stage wins at Piancavallo and impressive times at the World Championship event in San Remo.
At the end of 1984, with uncertain plans for 1985, Caneva left Citroën to join Ford, where he drove the Escort Turbo Group A. Unfortunately, the car’s reliability issues meant that he only occasionally saw the finish line. Among his best results were 6th overall and 1st in Group A at the Targa Florio Rally and 2nd overall at the Rally della Maremma Toscana.
In 1987, Vittorio Caneva was finally signed by the Jolly Totip team to compete in the World Rally Championship in Group N. Despite showing competitive times, luck was not always on his side, with mechanical failures and other setbacks affecting his results. Promises of future opportunities did not materialize, leading Caneva to seek new paths.
In 1988, Caneva continued to compete in several World Championship rallies with cars provided by Lancia and the Race Day team. However, mid-season, he decided to retire from competitive racing.
Training the next generation of Champions
Understanding the need for precision and skill in rally driving, Vittorio Caneva established the Vittorio Caneva Rally School in 1989. At that time, there was no other institution in Italy providing substantial support to those who wanted to enter road racing competitions. The school was born out of his desire to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with aspiring rally drivers. Over the years, the school has trained some of the most successful drivers in the world, contributing to the development of 26 World Rally Champions under the guidance of Vittorio Caneva.
