That was the context of Franco Colapinto<\/strong>\u2019s winter training day at Circuit Andorra<\/a><\/strong>, our official partner for ice driving activities in Pas de la Casa. At over 2,400 meters above sea level, the surface offers extremely low friction, forcing the driver to rethink every instinct built on high grip asphalt racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the guidance of our instructor Alex Bercianos<\/strong>, the day was structured around one central objective: recalibrating sensitivity. On ice, the car never feels fully settled. It is constantly rotating, constantly searching for balance. The steering input must arrive earlier, the throttle must be measured with surgical precision, and the brake release becomes as important as the braking itself. Everything revolves around weight transfer and timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a driver accustomed to the aerodynamic stability and braking performance of Formula 1 machinery, the adaptation is both technical and mental. On asphalt, you attack the braking zone with confidence in the downforce and tyre load. On ice, you manage inertia. You anticipate movement instead of reacting to it. The slip angle becomes your operating window, and stability is something you build through smoothness rather than force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The progression throughout the day was clear. Initial runs focused on understanding how the chassis reacts when the friction coefficient drops dramatically. As confidence increased, the work shifted toward maintaining controlled oversteer through longer sequences, linking corners while preserving momentum. The goal was not spectacle. It was efficiency. Managing rotation without exceeding the narrow traction threshold that ice permits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This type of training is not just about winter driving. Ice is one of the most powerful tools for refining car control because it exaggerates every mistake and rewards precision. Without aerodynamic grip to mask imperfections, the driver\u2019s inputs become the decisive factor. Throttle discipline, steering accuracy and load management are exposed in their purest form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
